JCI Mining, a fast-growing opencast mining services provider, faced challenges with paper-based systems, inefficient data capture, and limited visibility into equipment and maintenance performance. By implementing On Key’s EAM platform and mobile field applications, they digitised their processes, standardised workflows across multiple sites, and gained accurate, real-time insights into asset health. The result: improved maintenance effectiveness, reliable data for decision-making, and greater operational control.

“Since implementing On Key, our maintenance effectiveness has significantly improved. The availability and accuracy of data now enable us to make better and faster decisions.” | Dannie Oosthuizen

Key challenges

  • Manual-driven paper-based work orders
  • Insufficient information received to optimise workflow processes
  • Time lag in getting feedback on work information
  • Inadequate reporting
  • Informal and MS Excel maintenance practices
  • Ineffective long-term maintenance planning and control process
  • Equipment failures, labour usage, and overall site information transparency
  • Challenges with historical data availability
  • Inefficient data-capturing process with inaccurate data

Our approach

  • Pragma implemented its core On Key EAM platform to provide the foundation for its multi-site asset register, well-formulated asset care plans, and meter-related items are embedded upon.
  • Standard reports and insights assisted in greater quick visibility and aid in performing data analysis on problematic equipment.
  • An easy-to-use generic asset type and asset tree were implemented to allow for easy navigation and logging of work orders per asset.
  • Asset Care Plans (statutory tasks included) were configured against asset types to ensure the required inspections and maintenance were executed at the required intervals. Technicians use the On Key Action Field Engineering Application to record work execution.

Value-add

Digitisation

  • Using mobile hand-held devices ensures that paper-based systems are no longer needed.
  • Standardised and streamlined workflow processes across all the various sites.
  • Improve data granularity.

Improved maintenance management

  • Preventive maintenance: Schedule and manage regular maintenance tasks to prevent breakdowns and extend the lifespan of assets.
  • Work order management: Efficiently track and manage maintenance requests and tasks, ensuring timely resolution of issues.

Data-driven decision-making

  • Analytics and reporting: Accessing detailed reports and analytics on asset performance and maintenance activities facilitates informed decision-making.

Resource optimisation

  • Labour management: Optimised the scheduling and deployment of maintenance staff, ensuring efficient use of labour resources.

Client background

JCI Mining was established in 2007 and was initially involved in the plant hire of earthmoving equipment. The company progressed to undertaking small subcontract load and haul projects and eventually culminated in supplying a full contract mining solution for clients, offering the full range of Opencast Mining services. With a sizable and expanding fleet, equipment maintenance and controls are an integral part of the business operations and success.
